Segment IV: News & Notes

House v NCAA Impact on College Football

1. Pay for Play is Here

  • Beginning July 1, 2025 Universities may pay their athletes , yet not required to do soi
  • Now comes' how to get there details and it is likely to be a roller coaster ride with sharp turns, sudden falls & steep climbs as 'House is implimented

2. Key Changes as a result of the House Settlement

  • Back Pay fpr Student Athletes (S-A)
    • College Athletic Department & the NCAA will pay back 2.8 Billion
    • S-A who competed from 2016 forward are eligible for compensation
    • The money will paid over a 10 year period (2025 2035)
    • Those who competed in mens Basketball & Football will receive the lion's share of these dollars
  • Revenue Sharing
    • Ciollege Athletic Departments who "Opt-in" will be able to pay out 20.5 million (per school) and this dollar amount {20.5 million}  will rise 4% each year)
    • This 20.5 million will cap out @ $32.9 million in the academic year of 2034-35
  • Roster Limits & New Rules
    • "Head Count" Rosters for scholarships distribution are going away and being repalced by the equilavency model for scholarship awards, with roster caps for individual sports
    • In other words colleges may offer full, partial, or nothing ... Athletic Departments are also free 'to bundle' Athletic, Academic, & Economic dollars in offers to potential S-A
    • The FBS has a roster limit of 105 all who may receive scholarship) the FCS can offer up to 63 equilavant scholarship ... with no roster limits
  • For those who Opt-Out of the House Settlement
    • These schools do not have to pay reperations to S-A back to 2016
    • They have no directive that compels them to revenue share or follow new roster rules
    • That said, they may not pay their S-A's
  • Revenue Sharing dollars are not in the same 'pot of gold' as NIL funds
    • While interconnected for S-A, they are quite distinct from one another.
    • NIL (Name, Image, & Likeness) refers to the right of college & high school athletes to monitize their personal brand (endorsements, sponsorships, & selling merchandise) to outside economic sources
    • While Revenue Sharing involves colleges directly paying up to 22% of their athletic revenues (Media rights & other commercial incone) gererated by athletic programs
    • NIL is entrepreneurial & individual-driven / While Revenue Sharing is Institutional and subject to stricter oversight
  • Watch out Boys ... Title IX is coming for you!
    • Schools will need to address Tilte IX compliance in how funds are distributed to males & females
    •  There is little; to no, doubt that the initial payout structure will be under assult from Title IX proponents, which mandates gender equity, from the "get go"

3. Final Thoughts on Implimentation guidelines

  • Revenue Sharing: In my opinion should be administered by & through the University's Athletic Department, whose representative reports directly to the University's President
  • NIL: should be governed by the newly formed College Sports Comission (CSC)
  • Transfer Portal: The NCAA provides oversight here in partnership with the specific conference to which the school is affiliated
